The following indexes can be used to locate births and marriages in cases where the date and/or location are not known. They also index delayed birth records, which are not held by the Library of Virginia.
Microfilm reels are available for use in the Library of Virginia reading rooms and to borrow through Interlibrary Loan.

This index is arranged alphabetically by surname. Each entry includes the child's name, names of the father and mother, date of birth, county in which the birth was recorded, and register page number.
A separate index lists enslaved children's birth records (1853–1865), arranged alphabetically by the name of the enslaver, overseer, employer, or informant.
