This index is arranged by surname and year range and includes death certificates issued between 1912 and 1954. Entries list the year and certificate number, which can be used to locate death certificates on microfilm. Note that the Library does not have death certificates on microfilm after 1939.
Microfilm reels are available for use in the Library of Virginia reading rooms and to borrow through Interlibrary Loan (Accession 36512).

*Reel 1 includes a death index that was created from transportation permits issued before 1912 and between 1912 and 1927. Death certificates were not required on the state level between 1896 and 1912, so the Library does not have state death certificates corresponding with deaths before 1912. The index may be helpful for establishing the dates of pre-1912 deaths.
