Guide to researching Virginia military service in the American Revolutionary War

Bounty Land

Bounty Land Applications and Certificates

Virginia awarded bounty land to soldiers and sailors who served for at least three years. Heirs could apply if the person who served had died. Proofs of service submitted with bounty land applications are known as Bounty Land Warrants. Images of bounty land applications may be viewed at the link below. Applications are also available on microfilm, which is often more legible than the online image.

Veterans whose land applications were approved received Land Office Military Certificates listing their rank and the amount of land to which they were entitled. These certificates are on microfilm. An index is available at the link below.

Bounty Land in Kentucky and Ohio

Bounty land awarded by Virginia was located in present-day Kentucky and Ohio; Virginia did not keep copies of the surveys and grants for those lands.
